Initial Conversations
Throughout October and November we conducted initial meetings with key stakeholders across the area. They provided feedback about our key principles for 1 Golden Lane, helping to inform the proposals here.
Amongst the comments we have incorporated are:
Multiple stakeholders stated that sustainability was a key priority for them.
We have decided to refurbish 1 Golden Lane rather than demolish and redevelopment the building. This a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.
Members of the Barbican Association, Golden Lane Estate Residents’ Association and the Cripplegate members said they would like to see some form of community space within the building.
We are exploring the possibility of including a community space at 1 Golden Lane, which could include meeting rooms or a community workshop.
Local residents said that they had concerns about the introduction of terraces and the possible noise and privacy impact.
Andy Sturgeon Garden Design, leading landscape and garden designers and multiple time medal winners at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, are proud to be part of the team developing the design proposals. They will ensure that the terrace space provided is considered in its design to ensure outlook is controlled, sound is attenuated and local biodiversity is significantly improved.
A number of stakeholders stated that they were concerned about an increase in height due to its impact on daylight and sunlight
Hawkins\Brown architects are a preeminent design practice who bring a heart felt social agenda and profound consideration to every project. Their involvement in this project will ensure the final proposal contributes and compliments the context with an architecture that is articulated to be considerate to sensitive neighbouring issues.
Representatives from the Golden Lane Estate Residents
Association said they would welcome better access for visitors
with mobility problems.
In its current state, 1 Golden Lane does not provide equitable access to all building users. An inviting step free entrance to people with access needs must be provided as an alternative to the current stepped main entrance to Golden Lane.
The Barbican Association requested that improvements be
made to the biodiversity and greening of the property and surrounding environment.
We are implementing an ambitious programme of urban greening across the site, including green roofs, biodiverse terraces and green veils to control outlook from the building and significantly improve the area’s biodiversity.
A resident from the Cobalt Building said she was concerned about any increase in congestion on the roads around the building.
An elected Cripplegate Member asked for the heritage façade of 1 Golden Lane to be protected and enhanced.
We will be cleaning and repairing the heritage façade at 1 Golden Lane to restore it for the community.
